## Who they are

Mona belongs to the farm the way weather does — old, unheeding, and impossible to displace. Emma Ladbruk arrives full of modern ideas, only to find her authority quietly outlasted by a woman who has trussed chickens the same way for eighty years. The friction between them is not argument but attrition, and it exposes how much of Emma's reforming zeal is really a wish for the old woman to be gone.
