# Irish Marnagan — Short Fiction character guide

> Irish Marnagan in Short Fiction by Ray Bradbury.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Marnagan, Irish

**First appearance:** 0006-morgue-ship

## Snapshot

A two-hundred-fifty-pound spaceman who treats keeping alive as a hobby, cracking jokes about asteroid monsters while his proton-gun proves useless against them.

## Who they are

Marnagan is the veteran of the crew, all thick lips and blazing green eyes, who suspects Gunther rigged the meteor and the crash as an ironic death for him. Trapped in a cave with forty minutes of air and impervious beasts at the door, he grins, poses for the camera, and quotes his father's advice to keep laughing for Irish luck. His gallows humor and refusal to panic carry the story's middle stretch, turning certain death into something almost companionable.
