# Margaret — Short Fiction character guide

> Margaret in Short Fiction by R. A. Lafferty.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0000-the-six-fingers-of-time

## Snapshot

A young woman whose casual account of a dream—dirty green rain, rats in her stomach, lampposts with hair—ignites a citywide phenomenon that no one can explain.

## Who they are

Margaret is one of the girls at breakfast whose offhand remark about a dream catches Bascomb Swicegood's ear and pulls him into a shared nightmare spreading across the city. She's guarded and dismissive when pressed, refusing to elaborate on a dream she considers private and dirty, yet her words are the spark that connects strangers through identical visions. Her resistance to Bascomb's interrogation makes her the reluctant hinge on which the Green-Rain Syndrome turns.
