## Who they are

Janazik is an alien comrade whose culture knows comradeship rather than romantic love, and that bond with Anse is the axis of his life. When Ellen's brother dies, Janazik claims the deed to spare Anse, knowing it will cost him both the woman and the friendship he treasures. His quiet sacrifice and final walk down to the sea give the story its ache and its moral center.
