A self-described strong man of a small country town who invents a dead fiancee named Amy to explain why he cannot marry the girl he loves.

## Who they are

Wilton is the cheerful, sympathetic fellow everyone in Bridley-in-the-Wold leans on, which is precisely the problem: he is so universally relied upon that he cannot bear to disappoint anyone, least of all the sensitive Mary. So he concocts Amy, a nonexistent former love whose memory supposedly stands between him and any future marriage, and then confesses the whole absurd fabrication to a stranger. His tangle of kindness, vanity, and self-defeating invention makes him a perfect Wodehouse study in well-meaning foolishness.
