## Who they are

Mr. Ferguson finds himself marooned in the office building after seven o'clock, forced into unwanted company with Master Bean, the employee he has just dismissed. Fleeing upstairs, he stumbles into the office of his acquaintance Blaythwayt and instead finds a girl — a woman from his past, after eighteen months of bitter silence. His dazed horror at the locked doors and his awkward reunion with her set the story's early arc in motion.
