# Mr. Gandle — Short Fiction character guide

> Mr. Gandle in Short Fiction by P. G. Wodehouse.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0000-when-papa-swore-in-hindustani

## Snapshot

A blighter from Oxford, President of the Union and all sorts of frightful things, Clifford Gandle is the suitor Lady Wickham champions and Bobbie Wickham dreads.

## Who they are

Mr. Gandle embodies everything Bobbie Wickham finds suffocating—respectability, achievement, the steadying influence her mother desires. His pursuit of Bobbie through the grounds of Skeldings Hall, baffled but not defeated, makes him both comic antagonist and pitiable figure. His presence forces Bobbie toward desperate measures, his worthiness itself becoming the problem in this comedy of incompatible virtues.
