# Lord Emsworth — Short Fiction character guide

> Lord Emsworth in Short Fiction by P. G. Wodehouse.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** An Emsworth

**First appearance:** 0000-when-papa-swore-in-hindustani

## Snapshot

A bewildered aristocrat who has spent years regretting the Emsworths lack a Family Curse, only to discover he has fathered one in the shape of his son Freddie.

## Who they are

Lord Emsworth listens to his son's marital disasters with the weary resignation of a man who has long since stopped expecting Freddie to do anything right. His lordship's dry, toneless interrogations — 'What precisely occurred?' — frame Freddie's rambling account of movie stars, scenarios, and a wife now installed at the Savoy. He is the still, exasperated center of a comic storm, a father whose ancient clan has produced, in Freddie, a catastrophe of truly dynastic proportions.
