Henry is a bashful boarder at Ye Bonnie Briar-Bush Farm whose only social equipment is a head stuffed with encyclopaedic trivia, deployed nervously on a tired dancer he meets by the lake. His awkward courtship — ballet history offered as flirtation, dates rattled off like telephone numbers — is both absurd and genuinely touching, and it works. He matters because his transformation from timid reader to lovesick suitor gives the story its tender comic engine, and because his happiness depends entirely on being admired for the one thing he has.
