# Clifford Gandle — Short Fiction character guide

> Clifford Gandle in Short Fiction by P. G. Wodehouse.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Gandle

**First appearance:** 0000-when-papa-swore-in-hindustani

## Snapshot

The blameless, Oxford-polished suitor Lady Wickham has chosen for Bobbie, and therefore the man Bobbie and Algy most want to be rid of.

## Who they are

Gandle is everything a mother could want — steady, respectable, a former President of the Union — which is precisely why Bobbie greets the prospect of marrying him with gloom. He pursues her patiently through the grounds of Skeldings Hall, baffled but not defeated, while Algy Crufts recoils at the very name. His oppressive suitability creates the pressure that drives Bobbie's scheming, and his dogged pursuit keeps the romantic plot simmering through the middle of the book.
