## Who they are

Bobbie has been married exactly a year, and the narrator Reggie Pepper, watching her at the flat, notices her hair piled in waves with diamonds and a dress that is the limit, all for a supposed quiet evening at home. When Bobbie's husband arrives with Reggie in tow, she turns scarlet, then white, then recovers with a laugh and plays ragtime as if nothing were wrong. Her desperate composure, and the anniversary she has clearly prepared for, drive the story's comic catastrophe.
