# Samuel Tansey — Short Fiction character guide

> Samuel Tansey in Short Fiction by O. Henry.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Tansey, Sam

**First appearance:** 0000-lord-oakhurst-s-curse

## Snapshot

A sheep man who tells exactly what happened and nothing more, refusing to dress a killing in speculation just to satisfy a young man's curiosity.

## Who they are

Tansey is the witness who won't perform: he reports the Winchester ball, Sallie's version, the absence of any gunshot, and then reaches for the coffee pot. His blunt 'No, I don't think' is both comic and principled — he draws a hard line between testimony and theory. That refusal shapes the story's early tension, making the reader feel the gap between what's known and what's wanted.
