## Who they are

Lorison moves between two worlds in O. Henry's alpine tale: the sunburned chamois hunter singing Bavarian fragments on a gorge path, and the polite groom-elect of a Van Winkler–Vance merger arranged without love. His wordless exchange of flowers with a golden-haired peasant girl is the story's warm center, set against the cold arithmetic of five million dollars and ancient lineage. That split — impulse versus arrangement — is what the early arc turns on.
