## Who they are

Levko is the headman's son, caught between a father who preens about dining with the Commissary and a sweetheart, Hanna, whose window he visits by moonlight. He is quick enough to turn the Commissary's note into a bargaining chip for his own wedding, and bold enough to wander the haunted shore where the drowned lady walks. His night among the spirits, and the gratitude of the maidens he helps, is what finally bends his father's vanity toward the marriage he wants.
