# Felise Freeland — Short Fiction character guide

> Felise Freeland in Short Fiction by Nella Larsen.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Felise, Freeland

**First appearance:** 0009-iii

## Snapshot

Harlem hostess whose easy warmth draws Clare Kendry back into the very circles Irene Redfield has spent years trying to keep her out of.

## Who they are

Felise Freeland moves through Harlem's social world with an unguarded liveliness that makes her gatherings the place where old ties get rekindled, whether anyone wants them to or not. Her friendship with Irene sits beside an unspoken pull toward Clare, whose arrival at Felise's evening unsettles Irene before the party even begins. Felise matters because she is the social gravity that keeps Clare circulating in Harlem, making the reunion Irene dreads feel not like chance but like something inevitable.
