Chapter 1
Passing
The opening of the novel introduces Irene Redfield, a light-skinned Black woman who receives a letter from her childhood acquaintance Clare Kendry, which she initially destroys but later retrieves. The narrative flashes back to Irene's chance reunion with Clare at the Drayton hotel in Chicago, where both are passing as white. Clare, now married to a racist white man named John Bellew who is unaware of her racial identity, rekindles their friendship. Irene is drawn into Clare's world, setting the stage for tension between security, freedom, and the dangers of passing.
Chapter 2
Part I: Encounter
Irene Redfield unexpectedly reunites with Clare Kendry at the Drayton hotel in Chicago. Irene recalls their childhood and the rumors about Clare's disappearance and possible passing as white. Clare reveals she married a wealthy white man, Jack, and has been living as white. She invites Irene to tea, and Irene reluctantly agrees. The encounter stirs complex feelings in Irene about Clare's choices and her own life.
Chapter 3
I
A man, cautious and desperate, moves through a desolate coastal strip between Merton and Shawboro. He approaches a lonely cottage, peers through the window at Annie Poole making biscuits, and enters without knocking.
Chapter 4
II
Annie Poole reluctantly hides a man named Jim Hammer who has shot a white man, despite her contempt for him, because her husband Obadiah would have done so.
Chapter 5
III
Jim Hammer hides in Annie Poole's house after accidentally shooting Obadiah during a tire theft. Sheriff Bill Lowndes and others arrive to inform Annie of Obadiah's death, while Jim, paralyzed by fear and possibly a stroke, listens from the bed, unable to move or confess.
