# Lawrence Cooper — Short Fiction character guide

> Lawrence Cooper in Short Fiction by Mary Shelley.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Lorenzo, Lawrence, Cooper

**First appearance:** 0000-a-tale-of-the-passions

## Snapshot

An exiled nobleman's son who tends his dying father by night and dreams of returning to Siena to avenge his house.

## Who they are

Lorenzo shoulders the whole weight of his ruined family — nurse to a wasting father, guardian to his sister, keeper of the household's dwindling purse. Grief has not narrowed him; it has enlarged him, though his tenderness toward his father coexists with a fierce inherited hatred of the Tolomei. When his father dies, he enters Siena expecting paradise and finds a desert, and his long nocturnal rebuilding of the family's razed palace shows how memory and vengeance become the engine of his early arc.
