# Flora Mancini — Short Fiction character guide

> Flora Mancini in Short Fiction by Mary Shelley.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Flora, Mancini, Florence

**First appearance:** 0000-a-tale-of-the-passions

## Snapshot

A beautiful Italian countess who tells a tale of a village girl's fatal passion, her sweet phrases and lovely face drawing listeners into sorrow on a moonlit lake.

## Who they are

She resists at first, unwilling to depress a party of pleasure with a tale of sorrow, but yields to entreaty and becomes the voice through which Anina's tragedy unfolds. Her Italian phraseology rings in the listener's ears as the sun sets and the lake shifts from purple to silver. She is both hostess and witness, and her reluctance to speak marks how dangerous such stories are — she knows the passion she describes spreads destruction widely.
