## Who they are

Ferdinando Eboli is a young noble whose father followed the deposed Ferdinand to Sicily but who returns to Naples to reclaim his estates through the Marchese Spina, a minister of Murat's government. Betrothed to the Marchese's daughter Adalinda and awaiting the campaign's end for his wedding, he rides down from the Apennine villa flushed with hope. His brief farewell and the lonely balcony where Adalinda watches the torrent after him set the story's quiet dread in motion: something in the world of war and revolution is about to test whether a man's identity is truly his own.
