> Fanny Chaumont in Short Fiction by Mary Shelley.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Fanny, little Fanny, fair Fanny, Chaumont

**First appearance:** 0000-a-tale-of-the-passions

## Snapshot

A Swiss peasant whose goddess-like bearing and storied marriage make her the living proof that real life outromances any wager.

## Who they are

Fanny descends a mountain path with her child and instantly becomes the subject of a stranger's bet about whether her life holds a romantic tale. Her cottage, sunny and prosperous beyond its neighbors, shelters a marriage between her patient majesty and Louis's fiercer, older energy. Her story matters because it teaches the travelers — and the reader — how love yokes fire to water, and because her grace under hardship sets the emotional key for the collection.
