First appearance: a tale of the passions
As a supporting figure in Short Fiction, Count Fabian dei Tolomei is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Son of the Countess Tolomei; falls in love with Flora while recovering from an injury.
Fabian dei Tolomei belongs to a fallen faction in Siena, and he moves through the city modestly dressed while taunts and maledictions follow his noble bearing. His whole being is bent on winning back the citizens' friendship and matching himself against the young head of the rival house, a contest he anticipates with almost grateful eagerness. He guards his sister Flora from the crowd's insults with a tenderness that borders on something more than brotherly, and that careful shielding shapes the household the story watches.
