# Mr. Humphreys — Short Fiction character guide

> Mr. Humphreys in Short Fiction by M. R. James.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Humphreys, Accordingly Humphreys

**First appearance:** 0017-mr-humphreys-and-his-inheritance

## Snapshot

A new heir touring the estate and village he has inherited, learning from a talkative steward just what kind of man his late uncle really was.

## Who they are

Humphreys has come into a tall redbrick mansion and its grounds without ever having met the uncle who owned them, and the village watches him with quiet, hat-touching scrutiny. As he walks the park with Mr. Cooper, he absorbs a portrait of the old man as a thorough valetudinarian—upright but utterly withdrawn from the life around him. That inheritance, both the house and the uncle's strange seclusion, is the ground on which the story's unease begins to grow.
