## Snapshot

A cheerful young library reader whose errand for a book leaves him white, shaking, and keeping one eye fixed on the door.

## Who they are

Garrett is a pleasant, ordinary young man who happens to be in the library class where a certain book is kept, and who does a stranger a small kindness. Whatever he saw there has left him propped by a fire, shivering, unable to describe it without distress. His collapse is the first hard evidence that the threat is real and spreading, and his halting account gives the investigation its crucial early clue.
