# George Williams — Short Fiction character guide

> George Williams in Short Fiction by M. R. James.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** George, Williams

**First appearance:** 0011-a-school-story

## Snapshot

A library colleague of William Garrett who visits him after the shock, offering the ordinary friendship that makes the uncanny seem briefly manageable.

## Who they are

Williams belongs to the small circle of young library men who know Garrett well enough to call on him when he is propped white and shaking by the fire. He is a contemporary, not an investigator, and his presence gives the story a register of normal life against which Garrett's terror can be measured. His visit matters because it shows what Garrett stands to lose, and because the haunting does not confine itself to the person who first saw it.
