# Sashenka — Short Fiction character guide

> Sashenka in Short Fiction by Leonid Andreyev.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** divine Sashenka

**First appearance:** 0001-short-fiction

## Snapshot

A thirteen-year-old brawler expelled from school and neglected at home, Sashka howls without tears and draws caricatures of his tormentors rather than kneel to a life he never chose.

## Who they are

Sashka endures cold morning washes, beatings, and hunger, avenging himself on the world through fights, lies, and insolence — but never lies to his father, who secretly feeds him. His mother drinks and beats him; his copybooks fill with savage drawings of her swinging a rolling pin. On Christmas Eve, drifting through freezing streets past a lamp's red glow, he embodies a boyhood where defiance is the only dignity available.
