## Who they are

Garaska survives on scraps his father secretly slips him and on the fear he inspires in other boys, having traded school and washing for a liberty that leaves him perpetually on the edge of starvation. His mother, reeking of vodka and quick with her fists, has all but abandoned him, yet he meets her neglect with defiance rather than tears. His restless, vengeful energy — thrashing companions, mocking teachers, refusing to beg pardon — makes him the story's raw embodiment of a childhood that will not be broken, only sharpened.
