> Wallace Offdean in Short Fiction by Kate Chopin.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Mr. Wallace Offdean, Offdean, Mr. Offdean

**First appearance:** 0001-a-no-account-creole

## Snapshot

A young New Orleans businessman sent to inspect a ruined Red River plantation, he arrives hoping for solitude and finds instead the Santien place and its lingering hold.

## Who they are

With a modest inheritance and a new commission from Harding & Offdean, Wallace Offdean comes to Natchitoches parish to survey the old Santien land, imagining the trip as a retreat where he can take counsel with his better self. The crumbling house, the overgrown fields, and the Creole family still tangled in the place's history draw him out of his careful city habits. His restlessness on that veranda opens the story's central question of whether a man can choose his course or is chosen by what he finds.
