First appearance: Tante Cat'rinette
As a supporting figure in Short Fiction, Tante Cat'rinette is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
The protagonist, a formerly enslaved woman fiercely protective of her home and devoted to Miss Kitty, whom she nursed as a child.
Tante Cat'rinette moves through the world of the plantation and the village with a dignity that will not bend, her place secured by decades of service but her spirit never quite owned. She watches the young people around her—their loves, their recklessness, their departures—with an old woman's clear sight and a tongue she keeps mostly still. Her presence anchors the stories in a lived history of bondage and endurance that the younger generation only half understands.
