# M'sieur Michel — Short Fiction character guide

> M'sieur Michel in Short Fiction by Kate Chopin.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Michel, M'sieur

**First appearance:** 0013-a-wizard-from-gettysburg

## Snapshot

A solitary Acadian farmer with leonine shoulders and wildflowers in his arms, he walks into an Easter Mass and finds the old hymns turning against him.

## Who they are

M'sieur Michel lives apart on his hill, avoiding the church and the people whose presence unsettles him, until some force he cannot name drives him into the crowded Easter service. When the Gloria rises around him, the music he once chanted as a boy becomes a menace rather than a comfort, and he flees before it. His flight and the longing that follows expose a man divided between solitude and the pull of a faith he thought he had left behind.
