**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Prejudice Madame Carambeau

**First appearance:** 0042-a-matter-of-prejudice

## Snapshot

A proud Creole matriarch whose rigid prejudices are quietly undone by the trusting arms of an American child she never meant to love.

## Who they are

Madame Carambeau rules her household and her Sunday routines with the unruffled authority of a woman who has never had reason to question herself. When a feverish American child is left in her care, she nurses the girl with practiced gentleness while privately cataloging the child's every objectionable trait. After the little one leaves, though, she finds the warmth of those small arms lingering, and doubt begins to work at the crust of her long-held contempt.
