A half-breed Indian girl with no home, no age she can name, and a habit of breaking tumblers over customers' heads, handed off to a Cajun family as a chance in a thousand.

## Who they are

Loka appears at the side door of Frobissaint's oyster saloon asking for food and is promptly put to washing tumblers, which she shatters until she starts breaking them on his patrons. Dragged before the Band of United Endeavor, she stands in red calico rags, big-boned and clumsy, her frank slow eyes the only feature the ladies can praise. Sent to the Padues to be taught work and morals, she meets Madame Padue's sharp question—'How come you don't talk French, you?'—with a shrug and an offer of English and a little Choctaw.
