First appearance: a visit to avoyelles
As a supporting figure in Short Fiction, Lalie is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
A frail, poorly nourished girl waiting for Père Antoine; she lives with her abusive grandmother on the Bon-Dieu and is forced to work in the fields.
Lalie belongs to the world of Odile's children, the household whose sudden arrival upends Mamzelle Aurélie's solitary routines. Her poor health and the strain of her home life shadow the story's tender comedy about a woman who swears she'd rather manage a dozen plantations than four children. She matters as the reminder that the children being cared for come from somewhere harder than the peaceful yard they've briefly escaped.
