# Bud Aiken — Short Fiction character guide

> Bud Aiken in Short Fiction by Kate Chopin.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mr. Bud Aiken, Bud, Mr. Aiken, Aiken

**First appearance:** 0052-in-sabine

## Snapshot

A shiftless and abusive husband whose neglect of his wife and family makes him the quiet villain of the households he drifts through.

## Who they are

Bud Aiken is the kind of man whose laziness curdles into cruelty, a husband who takes without providing and punishes without cause. His wife endures him with a patience that reads less as devotion than as the absence of any other road, and the neighbors know enough to keep their distance. His presence in the stories is a pressure rather than a scene—the reason a woman might flee, the reason a household holds its breath.
