## Snapshot

A quick-tempered young planter whose stubborn independence and taste for mischief make him the most dangerous man at any 'Cadian ball.

## Who they are

Alcée Laballière is a prosperous sugar and rice planter whose hot temper and restless charm unsettle every gathering he enters. When gossip accuses him of preferring mulatto company, he answers by defiantly seating the Giestin family at his own breakfast table, scandal be damned. His presence at the 'Cadian ball is enough to drag Bobinôt from his plow and set Calixta's world tilting, making him the quiet engine of the story's romantic weather.
