> Sir Robert Ardagh in Short Fiction by J. Sheridan Le Fanu.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Ardagh, Sir Robert

**First appearance:** 0001-the-fortunes-of-sir-robert-ardagh

## Snapshot

A morose Irish landowner who returns from foreign wars with a fortune, a winning streak at the races, and a strange companion no one else can place.

## Who they are

Ardagh keeps to Castle Ardagh in proud solitude, breaking his seclusion only for the racing season, where he bets deeply and never loses. The one person he speaks to freely is a peculiar stranger seen nowhere else, whose advice seems to explain his luck and whose presence feeds the country people's darkest surmises. His isolation and his bargain set the terms of a story about what a man will trade for fortune.
