Pale, dark-haired, and ungainly in his rage, he storms out of the oak parlour with his fists clenched and his legal advisers against him, and carries his grievance to London. His quarrel with Charles is the engine of the tale's early movement, and the bitterness he nurses there will shape everything that follows.
