## Who they are

Known in the household simply as Mrs. Carwell, she has resumed her maiden name and buried the rest: a husband hanged for forgery, a child told her father died long ago, and a powerful man who arranged it all. Coarse, vain, and practical, she lives on beef and pudding and punch rather than sentiment, yet the sight of a name in a newspaper can still leave her cold and sick. Her presence in the story's middle arc is the hinge on which an old crime turns, and the fear she feels toward her own daughter is the first crack in her carefully managed world.
