# Nell Gorman — Short Fiction character guide

> Nell Gorman in Short Fiction by J. Sheridan Le Fanu.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Nell

**First appearance:** 0020-the-spectre-lovers

## Snapshot

A handsome young widow who buries her husband on Monday and is being talked out of mourning, and into a new match, by Thursday.

## Who they are

When the snowstorm swallows Jim, Nell spends a night of tears and self-pity, certain he has killed himself out of spite and left her the unfortunate female. Her cousin Jim Mallowney, a snug farmer with an eye on her, arrives three days after the funeral to reason her gently out of lingering, noting that Shrovetide is nearly over and she will be late for this year's marrying. Her quick pivot from lamentation to courtship is the story's comic heart, and the pivot on which the whole mistaken-corpse plot turns.
