# Mynher Vanderhausen — Short Fiction character guide

> Mynher Vanderhausen in Short Fiction by J. Sheridan Le Fanu.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Vanderhausen, Wilken Vanderhausen

**First appearance:** 0006-strange-event-in-the-life-of-schalken-the-painter

## Snapshot

A burgher of Rotterdam who arrives at a painter's door at nightfall, stone-still beneath his beaver hat, and asks for a meeting at the same hour tomorrow.

## Who they are

Nothing about Mynher Vanderhausen is quite right: the heavy flap of his hat hides every feature, a rich chain glints beneath his cloak, and his perfect, moveless stillness silences the artist's testy greeting before it can be spoken. He speaks only to name himself, his city, and his business—matters of weight, to be discussed the following evening—and then is gone with a quick, silent step. His arrival in the early arc of the tale plants a figure whose gravity and oddity the reader cannot shake, and whose errand will draw the painter's household into a bargain it does not yet understand.
