## Who they are

Mr. Smith moves among the Marston brothers as their father's sudden death turns Gylingden Hall into a battlefield of lawyers and recrimination. Scroope, disinherited by a will that specially excepted the estate, storms off to London while Charles, the winning son, is nearly as furious. Smith's narration carries the reader through the quarrel and into the darker rooms of the family's past, where the house itself seems to keep score.
