# Lady Emily — Short Fiction character guide

> Lady Emily in Short Fiction by J. Sheridan Le Fanu.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Emily

**First appearance:** 0009-a-chapter-in-the-history-of-a-tyrone-family

## Snapshot

A broken heiress who traded a nunnery wall for a handsome Captain's arms, and now shuts herself in her room with only an old Irish servant for company.

## Who they are

Lady Emily married beneath her for love, and the Captain repaid her by spending her income and frightening her out of her wits with oaths and threats. Latterly she has withdrawn almost entirely to her chamber, attended by the grim, religious Molly Doyle, whom her husband hates and threatens to pitch out the window. Her slow erasure from her own house — and the strange devotions that gather around her sickbed — set the haunting machinery in motion.
