# Jim Sulivan — Short Fiction character guide

> Jim Sulivan in Short Fiction by J. Sheridan Le Fanu.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Jim, Jim kem, James

**First appearance:** 0008-jim-sulivan-s-adventures-in-the-great-snow

## Snapshot

A man presumed dead in a snowstorm who returns to find his wife already three days widowed, consoled, and courted.

## Who they are

His absence during a great snow sets the whole comedy in motion: his wife Nell spends the night lamenting him as a dissipated bliggard safely in glory, and by morning the servants are digging a corpse out of the quarry. The body is a stranger's, dressed just like Jim and beaten past recognition, and it is waked and buried as his own while the neighbours make what diversion they can. When Jim finally walks back into this tangle of mourning, remarriage plans, and mistaken identity, the story's engine is his living face arriving where his grave already is.
