## Who they are

Charles Marston grew up in the rough, hard-drinking atmosphere of Gylingden Hall, where quarrels were settled with blows and the old Squire's favour was won by nerve. When the will passes over his elder brother Scroope and leaves the estate to him, Charlie gains the house but also a furious enemy bound by blood. His inheritance is the hinge on which the family's unraveling turns, and his own temper makes him no innocent bystander to the coming ruin.
