## Who they are

He speaks from the far side of a vanished world, recalling Toby Marston's pug-faced rages, the wrestling match with Handsome Charlie, and the sudden black-faced death that split two brothers into open war over Gylingden. His testimony is the reader's only window onto that feud, and it is delivered with the easy authority of a man who saw it all and outlived it. What he witnessed of the Marstons gives his later narration its weight, and his plainness makes the uncanny parts land harder.
