> Bessie Hennock in Short Fiction by J. Sheridan Le Fanu.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Bessie

**First appearance:** 0033-an-authentic-narrative-of-a-haunted-house

## Snapshot

A servant girl whose ordinary duties bring her face to face with something that should not be there, and whose account cannot be dismissed.

## Who they are

Bessie Hennock occupies the lower rungs of the household, where the supernatural is often first felt and least credited. Her ghostly encounter is the kind of testimony that gets waved away as nerves or fancy, yet the detail and conviction of her account make it hard to ignore. She matters because she is the witness the reader trusts when the official story breaks down, and her fear carries the story's chill into the everyday.
