## Who they are

Ally Moran lives on the edge of Chapelizod in a house little better than a hovel, too poor and too old to be courted as company. She dotes on her grandson Peter, a dancing, drinking, politics-mad slob whom she has raised since orphanhood and whose fortune she confidently predicts. Her indulgence of his idleness and her own strange reputation give the tale its first faint chill of the uncanny.
