Chapter 3
I
On the eve of the Assumption, a high school boy joins the farm hands to sleep on the threshing floor. The group includes Khomut, Kiriushka, Pashka, Theodot, and Ivan, a cynical machinist. The boy, awkward and sunburned, has spent the summer working with the peasants, losing his innocence and adopting their rough ways. As they settle into the straw, the boy struggles with fleas and drowsiness, while the men talk and Ivan lights his pipe.
Chapter 4
II
Pashka recounts a vivid story of escorting and killing a Georgian convict in the Caucasus, detailing the chase and bayonet strike. The old man listens approvingly, while Ivan criticizes Pashka's actions as foolish. Theodot remains silent, and the schoolboy is disturbed by the tale.
Chapter 5
III
Theodot recounts the trouble caused by his she-goat, which led to a quarrel, a murder, and his subsequent penance at a monastery. He describes the goat's mischievous behavior, the financial strain, and the domestic conflict with his wife.
