# How does Short Fiction develop the theme of Social Class and Inequality?

> Short Fiction by Hjalmar Söderberg

## Answer

Short Fiction by Hjalmar Söderberg develops Social Class and Inequality across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Class divisions are central, from the chimney-sweeper's wife's disdain for a charwoman's daughter in 'The Chimney-Sweeper's Wife' to Bloom's poverty and imprisonment in 'Bloom,' highlighting how social standing dictates fate, relationships, and moral judgment.

The contrast between Judge Richardt's wealth and Dr. Henck's poverty is stark; the fur coat becomes a symbol of status that temporarily elevates Henck's self-worth and alters how others perceive him.

The interactions at the Blue Anchor highlight class distinctions and social hierarchies.

The men in the smoking-room are distinguished by age and decorations, and Fant's tattoo marks him as different, leading to gossip and mockery.
