# Signy — Short Fiction character guide

> Signy in Short Fiction by Hjalmar Söderberg.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Signy Signy

**First appearance:** 0018-signy

## Snapshot

A boy's invented playmate, conjured from nothing at seven and renamed Ida when grownups grew suspicious of the sibilant whispering.

## Who they are

Signy exists only in the narrator's murmured conversations, a private companion he created the way a German creates a camel, out of the depths of his own consciousness. When his parents pry and tease, he renames her Ida to hide the telltale sound, then quarrels with her and lets her go, learning to think in silence instead. She matters because she is the first sign of the imaginative compulsion that will later make him a writer.
