**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Henck

**First appearance:** 0001-short-fiction

## Snapshot

A dying doctor who buys a fur coat to feel his wife's love once more, and gets it — in the darkest corner of the hall.

## Who they are

Henck comes home laden with parcels and a tender shoulder, his one consolation the fur coat he hopes will thaw his wife's recent coldness. She steals up to him in the dark hall and kisses him warmly, murmuring that Gustav isn't home yet — and he answers, trembling, that he is. Later, over whisky and a Christmas fire, he tells Judge Richardt that this will be their last Christmas together: he is a doctor, and he knows with full certainty that his days are numbered.
